Worship to Destroy?

This is the sacred ice Linga of Amarnath. Every year, millions of visitors take a perilous journey travelling on horsebacks and crossing glaciers to visit this sacred spot. This spot is sacred to many Hindus. But, the increasing number of pilgrims to the place is serving a danger for the delicate ice clad mountain environment. The body heat of millions of people, fuel pollution from nearly 300 helicopters frequenting the area every day and the plastic wastes as well as human waste everything will contaminate the pristine origin of the mighty Indus river in a few years, beyond recovery if the government does not take any action to clean the area now. Meteorite Hit

Every one of us read a giant meteor hit Siberia injuring over a 1000 people. It is quite surprising how meteorites we very often see in video games and sci-fi movies can cause such a damage. Though several stories surround meteors, most of them are complete myths. Only one person on the earth Ann, a resident of Alabama was actually hit by a meteor before this incident, directly. Even in the recent Siberia incident the residents of the affected town were injured only through broken glass and objects which fell on them due to sudden earthquake like vibration created because of the meteor. Click here to know more about Ann's story.

Here are some pictures of meteors which have hit the earth earlier. This one was recovered from Greenland in 1896. Explorer Robert Peary got it from the ancient Inuit people living in Greenland. It is preserved in The American Museum of Natural History.

Animal Gods

Worshiping animals was a common practice among many ancient civilizations. The Egyptians worshiped several animals from snakes and birds to lions and cats. Even today certain countries like India which have very long cultural history worship animals in various forms. Some of their prominent Gods are Ganesha - the elephant God, Hanuman - the monkey God, Narashima - the Lion God and Naga Devi - the snake God. Legend has it that each of these Gods were created to destroy certain evil powers which shielded themselves from being destroyed by any human or divine force. Creation of such mutant, powerful beings was necessary to slay certain demons. Here are the photos of some of our animal Gods.

Every country has similar Taboo practices in their cultures. Click to know more about people who beat themselves before intercourse, families which drink and dance before the corpses of their ancestors and many more weird practices prevalent all through the earth here.
